A quick google search of “latin people streoytypes” brings up images of scantily- clad oil tanned, raven haired, dark- lipped, shapely women. This fetishization of Latinas in the media https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/death-and-memory/anglo-saxon-ship-burial-sutton-hoo is n’t just embarrassing, but it also has serious consequences. It exacerbates bias and can lead to intolerance. It can even advertise dating violence and increase sexual abuse of younger ladies.

The strangeness and fetishizing of latina physiques turns them into bare objects to be won and showcased. This is not to say that there are n’t some positive stereotypes of latina women, but the majority of portrayals in our mediascape leave out a whole community. This typecasting of latinas can reduce their ability by internalizing the image that world puts back of them.

Moreover, these prejudices may be damaging to expat communities because they can fuel extra- immigrant sentiments and reinforce the idea that Latinas do n’t belong in the workplace or contribute to the economy. It’s important to create Latina personalities who are smart, driven, and successful. But it’s just as crucial to compose them with shortcomings, also.
